I have an odd problem with my APC Smart-UPS 1250VA UPS. Its more than a few years old now, but it has worked flawlessly. Issue is this, the 'Replace Battery' LED is on, and the unit beeps like mad. I have replaced the batteries in it before, last time was about 2 years ago, but I don't recall this behavior with the old batteries. Anyway, the batteries are 12 Volt, 17AH type.

I have measured the voltage on both of them, and both are reading 13+ volts. I wonder what could be the problem. If I press the test button, it goes on battery mode for a split second, the battery indicator drops down to zero, and it starts beeping and Replace Battery LED is on. I'm not sure what to do now, I don't want to order a new set of batteries only to find out that the unit is screwed.
I'm thinking the batteries are able to hold voltage, but can't deliver under load. Is there an easy way of load testing the batteries at home? I have a multimeter for testing, that's about all. Oh and I tried charging the batteries manually with a trickle charger, and still when they were put back in the UPS, same thing happened.If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.Thanks in advance. If it when the batteries are in the UPS and under charging voltage, what you are measuring is the UPS charging voltage, not the batteries.

Measure the voltage with the UPS unplugged and the batteries under the normal load of the computer. This will tell you much more. IF they cannot support the load for the normal amount of time, then they are ready to be replaced.Added note - Actually measuring the voltage across the batteries when the UPS is charging is a good indicator that the UPS is charging the batteries correctly. Should be around 13.2 to 13.5 volts for charging, depending on the type of battery.

When they are in the UPS, and the UPS is charging them, the voltage is a little over 14V on each battery. On a sidenote, I found my old UPS batteries that I never disposed of, and I put them in for a few hours to charge, and they actually dont fail the test, but the battery meter goes down pretty low. I think I just need new batteries, the UPS is fine I think.
